Georgia Redistricting: The Next Ten Years

Young Republicans have an opportunity to shape Georgia for the better.

The state legislature officially convened to redistrict the state’s legislative districts, both state and federal. For the first time in the state’s history, Republicans control the process of redistricting from start to finish. Having the governor’s mansion, and both houses of the State legislature, Republicans can guarantee a fair and transparent process that hasn’t occurred before.

Make no mistake, politics will still play a major part in the process. Democrats, who for the first time are on the outside looking in, are trying to play their hand by race baiting. House Democratic leader Stacy Abrams said the Republicans wish to redistrict out white Democrats. House Speaker David Ralston was correct to say “her comments are harmful to Georgia.”  We strongly agree with Speaker Ralston.

Moreover, the redistricting process will require the state legislature to draw in a new Congressional district, awarded as a result of the 2010 census. Early intelligence, according to Jim Galloway at the AJC, says that there will a lot of political interests at stake in the Congressional redistricting. This is where Young Republicans can have a huge impact moving into the future.

It’s critical that Young Republicans contact their state legislators (House / Senate) and make their views known. State and Congressional redistricting is a process rife with corruption, something the Republicans have promised to change. That means our voices will be heard, and will be heeded, when the final boundaries are drawn.

You can visit the Georgia General Assembly’s website for reapportionment when you click here. There you will find a wealth of information about the redistricting process. More importantly, you will find ways to establish contact with your legislators who will have a large impact on the process itself. Let your voices be heard, and let your opinions be known.

We are the Georgia Young Republicans, and we will see that our state government represents the conservative values that have led to our state’s growth in its population and political power.
